URGENT CALL TO DEFEND THE VENEZUELAN PRESIDENT NICOLAS MADURO

NO TO ANY US-BACKED
CAPRILES COUPRESPECT VENEZUELA’S ELECTION RESULTS

may20thlogao
CHAVEZ PRESENTE, MADURO PRESIDENTE!

Right-wing elements backed by U.S. imperialism are attempting a coup against constitutional rule in Venezuela. Seven people in Venezuela have already been killed. There is a witch hunt against Cuban doctors who have made great sacrifice to provide health care there. The Venezuelan masses, other Latin Americans and progressives worldwide have stood up and said “no” to this coup, which follows the rightist defeat in that country’s free and fair election April 14.

There is no question that the Bolivarian candidate, Nicolas Maduro, won the election. With a much higher proportion of the population voting than in U.S. elections, Maduro’s victory was as substantial as Barack Obama’s last November and much stronger than any of George W. Bush’s. And he won this election even though 90 percent of the still privately owned media slandered him and his party throughout the campaign.

No one outside Venezuela has any right to challenge the authenticity of the April 15 election. That the Obama administration has demanded a recount is only proof of the dangerous intervention of U.S. imperialism in Venezuelan and Latin American affairs
Obama’s aggressive stand is a sign that Washington believes that the Bolivarian movement can be overthrown now that Hugo Chávez is no longer alive. The European Union and especially the Spanish regime has joined the U.S. in this attempt. This imperialist offensive must be stopped.

After the presidential elections in Venezuela last Tuesday 10 people were killed as a result of opposition violence; three in Caracas, three in Ojeda, Zulia, one in Cumana, one person in San Cristobal and Carabobo

The opposition set fire to 12 Central Diagnostic Centres (CDIs – part of the Barrio Adentro health mission), and 3 subsidised food markets (Mercals). They also attacked the director of the National Electoral Council CNE, Tibisay Lucena’s house, and the Telesur and VTV offices.

There are also reports of four attacks on housing mission buildings in Miranda, The governor of Carabobo state, Francisco Ameliach, reported that 8 CDIs were “besieged” and Cuban doctors were attacked in his state. He said 64 people were detained inside the CDI, and “should go to jail, because we’re not going to tolerate a coup d’état here”.In addition to this more than 61 people were wounded in the country.

Foreign Minister Elías Jaua said “Our victory over violence will be peace. Their victory will be a divided Venezuela, a civil war and foreign intervention. That’s the goal of those provocations.

The opposition is calling for a recount of the vote, despite the fact that they had electoral witnesses in every polling center to certify the number of votes they obtained. Additionally, the widely respected electronic vote system allows audits before, during and after the election so that every political party is present during the electoral process. One of the rectors of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Vicente Díaz, who is aligned with the opposition, said that there was no doubt about the election results. So far, Capriles has not submitted any official request to the CNE or Supreme Court of Justice for a recount, nor has he condemned the violent acts. Instead, he has simply publicly demanded that the CNE hold a recount, rather than requesting it through the established legal mechanisms which are in place and do exist.
Bring red flags, red shirts. Bring drums and trumpetas and lets make a lot noise

WE NEED TO LET THE WORLD KNOW ABOUT THIS FASCIST COUP IN PROGRESS IN VENEZUELA.

As a United States citizen I am outraged and disgusted by yet another illegitamate attempt by my government to undermine a popular vote in a foreign country. This proves that our government does not really value DEMOCRACY elsewhere in the world, which says much about the likelihood it will actually value it here at home. In fact it is NOT truly valued here, and this is quite evident in the many programs, laws, and institutions which exist in the U.S. which do NOT place the rights and best interests of the citizens over those of the wealthy, the powerful, and the corporate/banking/military complex.
Those of us in the Occupy movement here in the States and elsewhere will do what we can to call attention here and internationally to this travesty of justice and democracy.
